What we learnt whilst sponsoring the Banknote Conference 2024

Ben Horgan shares his takeaways from the Banknote Conference 2024

4 minute read

The Banknote Conference 2024 is a biennial gathering of industry leaders, and experts from around the globe held to explore the latest trends and technologies in the banknote sector. The conference is renowned for its comprehensive agenda and its key speakers serving as a pivotal platform for exchanging ideas and fostering collaborations that drive the industry forward.

This year, Moneycorp proudly sponsored the Banknote Conference. We were delighted to engage with our peers across the industry and showcase our dedication to making a significant contribution to the future of secure and sustainable currency production, as well as deepening our understanding of the evolving needs and challenges faced by our partners and clients.

Here are four things I learnt at the Banknote Conference

Advancements in technology are revolutionising the future of banknote design and production, promoting innovation, and strengthening security measures.

At this year’s Banknote Conference, it became evident that technology is a key driver in transforming the banknote industry. One of the major takeaways from the conference was the progress made by security experts combating counterfeiting. The industry faces the continuous challenge of staying ahead of these illegal activities which requires constant research, development, and implementation of new security measures to protect the integrity of banknotes. It also underscores the importance of global cooperation and information sharing among financial institutions and security agencies.

Regulatory frameworks are becoming more critical than ever, safeguarding the integrity and security of global currency systems.

The role regulation plays in the banknote industry is more significant than ever, something we at Moneycorp have always understood. It is great to see governments and regulatory bodies continue to intensify their efforts to ensure that banknotes remain secure and that the processes involved in their production adhere to the highest standards. We believe regulations are crucial in fostering transparency and trust in financial systems. The conference highlighted various regulatory developments and the increasing need for consistent standards to prevent financial crimes.

Central banks are focusing on sustainability and environmental responsibility in their currency production practices.

Sustainability was a major theme at the conference, with central banks from around the world showcasing their efforts to make currency production more environmentally friendly. Initiatives such as using recycled materials, reducing the carbon footprint of banknote manufacturing, and implementing eco-friendly disposal methods for old notes were discussed. This shift towards sustainability is not only a response to global environmental concerns but also reflects the evolving expectations of the public and stakeholders who demand responsible corporate practices.

Collaboration between industry leaders and financial institutions is essential for driving forward innovation and addressing emerging challenges in the banknote sector.

A topic which Moneycorp holds in high regard is the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders in the banknote industry. By working together, central banks, commercial banks, technology providers, and security experts can pool their knowledge and resources to tackle common challenges. This collaborative approach allows innovation and ensures the industry can effectively respond to new threats and opportunities.

It was a pleasure to be a part of the Banknote Conference 2024. Our takeaways highlight the dynamic nature of this industry and the continuous efforts required to adapt to technological advancements, regulatory demands, and sustainability goals. As the sector evolves, it is clear that innovation, security, regulation, sustainability, and collaboration will remain at the forefront of its progress and therefore Moneycorp’s.
